چکیده

We appreciate the opportunity to respond to the letter from Drs Bekaert and Rayman regarding our recently published article (1) on the association between plasma selenium concentrations and prostate cancer risk in the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC). Bekaert and Rayman point out that the mean plasma selenium concentration of EPIC participants is lower than that reported in North American populations, and we acknowledge that the range of selenium concentrations may have to extend beyond that required to saturate plasma glutathione peroxidase and selenoprotein P to observe an association with prostate cancer risk. Nonetheless, our results are consistent with some other studies conducted in men with relatively high selenium concentrations (2–4), suggesting that our null finding may not be solely due to low baseline concentrations. Evidence from trials is also inconsistent; although the Nutritional Prevention of Cancer trial showed a significantly reduced risk of prostate cancer among participants receiving supplementation who had a low prostate specificantigen concentration and a low baseline selenium concentration (5), the Selenium and Vitamin E Cancer Prevention Trial (SELECT) was prematurely discontinued because there was evidence that selenium supplementation did not prevent prostate cancer and some concern that it may increase the risk of diabetes (6). Only if results of detailed subgroup analyses from the SELECT can confirm the apparent protective effect of selenium supplementation among men with low baseline selenium concentrations do we think that further research on selenium supplementation and prostate cancer risk is warranted.

Attenuation of Diabetic Nephropathy by Carvacrol through Anti-oxidative Effects in Alloxan-Induced Diabetic Rats

Background and Objectives: Diabetes, a common metabolic disorder, is prevalent in many countries. Nephropathy is a main debate’s side effect. Role of oxidative stress is well known in induction of diabetic nephropathy while carvacrol is a potent anti-oxidant that might attenuate oxidative stress. The aim of this study was to explore the effect of carvacrol in d...

Protective effect of forskolin on diabetes induced nephrophaty via antioxidant activity

The present study aimed to investigate the role of adenylyl cyclase activator in preventing diabetic nephropathy via antioxidant activity in rats. Biochemical parameters were performed to confirm Streptozotocin induced nephropathy in rats. Male Wistar rats were used in the present study to reduce the effect of estrogen. Rats were subjected to high fat diet (HFD) for two weeks followed by low do...

Extract of Adenanthera pavonina L. seed reduces development of diabetic nephropathy in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

Objective: The aim of the present study was to investigate the renal protective effect of Adenanthera pavonina (A. pavonina) seed aqueous extract (APSAE), in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Materials and Methods: The renal protective effect of A. pavonina seed aqueous extract (APSAE) was studied in STZ-induced diabetic rats. APSAE (50, 100 and 200 mg/kg per day) was given daily to ...

The Protective Effect of a Low-Protein Diet against Tubulo-Interstitial Damage in Diabetic Kidneys

Clinically, the efficacy of a low-protein diet (LPD) on diabetic nephropathy is controversial. Our study clearly showed that a very-low-protein diet (VLPD) intervention improved advanced diabetic nephropathy, particularly tubulo-interstitial injuries by restoring autophagy through the suppression of the mammalian target of rapamycin complex 1 (mTORC1) pathway, in a rat model of type 2 diabetes ...

Renoprotection by Telmisartan versus Benazepril in Streptozotocin Induced Diabetic Nephropathy

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the major causes of end stage renal disease. Angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor and angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) are preferred for delaying progression of DN. This study compared the preventive renal effects of telmisartan (10 mg/kg, p.o.), an ARB that completely blocks angiotensin action, and benazepril (5 mg/kg, p.o.), an ACE inhibitor, whi...
